Try LMS for a Fresh Start

If you're ready to put the Year 2000 behind you and get fresh start in 2001, there's no better place to begin than CSM's Life Management Study class. You can sign up with the enclosed form or visit the CSM website at http://www.csmin.org . The winter session begins in early January. If there's no class scheduled near you, you can even take the course via the Net!

LMS is CSM's premier tool to help you discover God's plan for your life-for today, tomorrow and forever. We can't erase the past, but we can transcend it and begin today to obey God and structure our lives and finances according to His priorities.

Each LMS session lasts 13 weeks as participants meet for two hours with a trained leader. You'll need to carve out 20 to 30 minutes each day for homework. Your $95 registration fee ($75 for groups of four or more) includes a student manual, workbook and a copy of Ken Smith's book It's About Time. Partial scholarships are available. Call 703-591-5000 to find out about a class near you.

If you live in Laos or call Holland home, you can still take LMS-via the Internet. Regularly priced at $95, the course is discounted to $45 for a limited time. Not sure if you're ready to take the plunge? Sign up for a three-week trial for only $1 and get It's About Time, a $12 value. Visit the CSM website at http://www.csmin.org for details.

Taking Stock and Giving It
Mark W. Tracz, CFM

Have you taken stock of your stocks lately? If yours have increased in value and you're planning to make a donation to CSM, it might pay you and the ministry to give stock rather than cash. That's because when you sell the stock, you will owe capital gains tax on the difference between the price you paid and the price you receive from the sale. But if you give the stock to a charity, you will not owe the tax, and the ministry will receive a larger gift than if you sold the stock first and gave the proceeds, less the tax, to the ministry. You may also be eligible for a tax deduction for the gift, further reducing your cost.

For example, if you gave $10,000 in cash, CSM would receive $10,000 and you might receive a tax deduction of $3,960. If you sold appreciated stock instead and paid the capital gains tax of $1,600, you would have $8,400 to give CSM, and you would get a tax deduction of $2,360 ($3,960 less $1,600). On the other hand, if you gave stock worth $10,000 to CSM, you'd save $5,560 in taxes ($3,960 plus $1,600). When you give appreciated stock, CSM gets the maximum value, and you get the maximum tax savings. It's a win-win approach to giving. Donors save taxes and at the same time invest in the lives of Christians who are learning to be better stewards of their time and money.
